Black Canyon Ascent on October 16th
The Black Canyon Ascent 6-mile Run and Challenge Walk features a rad & scenic 6-mile uphill course starting at an elevation of 6500′ and climbing almost 2,000′ to the rim of the Black Canyon National Park! For over 40 years, beautiful vistas and scenic surroundings have inspired people to challenge themselves and the competition in this classic Western Colorado event. After the race, cool down those calf muscles and enjoy visiting the spectacular Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park. All participants will receive high-quality tech shirts with distinctive Black Canyon imagery. The race is also the San Juan Mountain Runners primary fundraiser for several local non-profits. *Please note that there may be mandatory last minute changes for health and safety reasons.

September 18th fun run
SATURDAY MORNING FUN RUN (September 18th): We will meet at 7:00 AM at Looney Bean (3480 Wolverine Dr in Montrose, near Target). Runners, joggers, walkers, all ages, all abilities – please come join us. Well behaved dogs are also welcome. Hope to see you there!
SJMR upcoming events
Trail Town 5 & 10 on August 28th: We rescheduled these races (which normally occur in June) in order to coordinate with the Ridgway River Festival which takes place the same day. You have a choice of running either the 5 mile course or the 10 mile course and then heading over to the River Fest to join in the festivities there. The registration fee is only $20 and registration starts at 6:30 AM; both the 5 and 10 mile races start at 7:30 AM. There is no online registration this year so just show up, register, and enjoy this scenic course in Ridgway. Directions: Take US-550 to Ridgway and turn east at the signal, then turn right on Palomino Trail where you will see us gathered.
Black Canyon Ascent on October 16th: We are in the planning stages for this year’s event with our new race director, Rachel Allen. Veterans Day Race on November 6th: Several SJMR members are helping to organize a 5k race in cooperation with the Welcome Home Alliance for Veterans. This race will start and end at the Montrose Community Rec Center. We will send out more information about this event as it becomes available.
Turkey Trot on November 25th: This is our annual community Thanksgiving Day event. Walkers, joggers, and runners have the option of a 2 mile out-and-back or for the serious eaters, shed those calories with our 4.2 mile loop. It’s great fun and gives us an excuse to indulge later in the day.
We continue to meet every Saturday morning at the Looney Bean parking lot in Montrose for a fun run. We are currently meeting at 7:00 AM. This is a nice way to connect with local runners, make new friends, see folks you haven’t seen in a while, and get in a run or walk.
