Due to COVID restrictions, the 2021 Black Canyon Ascent has been postponed until October. More information will be posted on this website as it becomes available.

Since we are unable to conduct our annual Montrose Turkey Trot in person, please show your Thanksgiving spirit by running, walking, or trotting any time of day, anywhere, and any distance between Wednesday 11/25 and Sunday 11/29.  Please take pictures of yourself and your friends & family participating in the event and share them on the Facebook event page.

Due to the challenges of the coronavirus (COVID-19), we decided to cancel the Black Canyon Ascent scheduled for May 16, 2020. We are still 8 weeks out but concluded that it is not feasible to safely predict the circumstances to host an event of this size on May 16, 2020. 

In addition to following local, state, and national health agencies’ recommendations regarding COVID-19, we were in communication with the Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park and they agree the race should be cancelled. We have a successful, long-standing relationship with the Park and are so grateful for their continued support during this time. 

Be assured that the Black Canyon Ascent will return!

Registration is now closed and those who have registered have 3 options to consider:

1. Full refund of their registration fee.

2. Complimentary deferment of their registration fee to be used for the 2021 Black Canyon Ascent. 

3. Take no action and allow the San Juan Mountain Runners to continue their support of local charities and non-profits.

We understand that the cancellation of this event is extremely disappointing to our runners and walkers. We sincerely appreciate the continued support of our loyal participants who have joined with us every year tackling this amazing and challenging event. Lastly, we look forward to seeing you at our next Black Canyon Ascent!
